This varied route takes you through Waterland, a region whose history has been dominated by water. Highlight of the route is the former island of Marken, with its elevated wooden houses, small fishing harbour and striking lighthouse.

From the ferry to Amsterdam North you get a splendid view of the IJ harbour and the city. Cycling along the dyke of the IJsselmeer, you come through the picturesque villages of Durgerdam and Uitdam. On your way back you come through the rural villages of Zuiderwoude, Holysloot and Ransdorp with its striking church tower that can be seen from far in the flat and open landscape. Surprisingly, this quiet countryside is only a stone’s throw from the centre of Amsterdam.
