Polders and fishing villages along the Zuiderzee coast

This route just north of Amsterdam, takes you through the polders of North Holland and along the former Zuiderzee coast, renowned for its traditional fishing villages and seafaring towns. Highlights of the route are the popular tourist villages of Edam and Volendam.

From the historic centre of Purmerend, you cycle through typical Dutch polders to Edam, famous for its cheese market and many draw-bridges. The route takes you along the former Zuiderzee coast to the quintessential Dutch fishing village of Volendam and the once prosperous town of Monnickendam. Via Ilpendam and the wetlands of Ilperveld nature reserve, you return to Purmerend.
