Does it get any better than this? Combine a week of sailing and living on board a classic clipper built in 1913 on Holland’s lake IJsselmeer with cycling touring to a long list of historic towns and villages. There really is no better way for anyone interested in sailing and cycling to explore what is a truly historic, beautiful and fascinating part of the world!

Your exciting tour of discovery on the stylish and beautifully appointed sailing clipper Elizabeth starts and finishes in Amsterdam and takes you along large sections of the IJsselmeer coast over the course of a week of sailing and cycling.

Lake IJsselmeer was created in 1933 when the 32 km long “Afsluitdijk” (Enclosure dike) was constructed as part of the larger Zuiderzee land reclamation project. The construction of the Afsluitdijk across the Zuiderzee (a salt water inlet of the North Sea) resulted in the salt water inlet becoming the freshwater lake IJsselmeer.

Today the many historic towns and the villages on the IJsselmeer are testament to a time when ships from the Dutch East India Company sailed from here to source their precious cargos of spices from across the seas. The entire region is crisscrossed by excellent cycle paths that you can pedal along to discover the charm of towns such as Monnickendam, Hoorn and Enkhuizen. On the eastern shore of the IJsselmeer you will visit the province of Friesland.

During the Sail & Bike tour around the IJsselmeer on the Leafde fan Fryslân, a three-masted barquentine, the daily cycling tours are accompanied by a local, knowledgeable and multi-lingual tour guide. You’ll visit the many charming towns and villages, cycle past the ever-changing, water-dominated landscapes and pick up tips and anecdotes along the way. If you prefer, you can also cycle the route on your own, using our detailed maps.

Elizabeth

The impressive clipper Elizabeth was built in 1913 and boasts a plush interior design. During the painstaking renovation to become a modern passenger sailing vessel great attention was paid to retaining the original features of the characteristic Dutch flat bottom boat. Roomy cabins with en-suite shower and lavatory, a large salon with bar and a snug seating area ensure your stay will be comfortable. The vessel has a total of 10 guest cabins with two single beds. Some of the cabins can be booked as a three-bed or four-bed cabin (the third and fourth beds as bunks). Eight cabins are located on the lower deck, two cabins on the upper deck. You can open a window or porthole in all the cabins. All cabins have a 220-volt socket. The Elizabeth is 41 meters long, 7 meters wide and has a sail surface of 445 m².

Leafde fan Fryslân

The Leafde fan Fryslân, an imposing, three-masted barquentine, will make its maiden voyage for Sail & Bike travel in 2018 and is managed by its owner-operators, Joris and Rinske de Wit. For many years, they have run the Leafde fan Fryslân, a three-masted clipper.

The Leafde fan Fryslân can comfortably carry 25 (maximum 30) guests and is 50 meters (approx. 165 ft.) long and seven meters (approx. 23 ft.) wide with a sail surface of 760 m² (approx. 2,500 sq.ft.).

The interior of this luxury ship can best be described as refined. The ship has 12 well-appointed twin cabins with two separate beds (ca. 11 m2), and one single cabin (ca. 7 m2). A third (bunk-)bed can be added in some cabins. All cabins have an en-suite bathroom with shower, basin and toilet. A porthole can be opened in every cabin.

Sumptuous meals are carefully prepared in the restaurant and the ship’s full-service, cosy bar is fully stocked. The wheelhouse is equipped with a well-appointed seating area and the best views over the water are available here and on deck.
