Beautiful woodlands, extensive heaths - it might not be the first thing that comes to mind when you think of Holland, but actually they're just as typical for the country as its iconic polders with windmills and cows.
Dutch cyclist love going to the woods and heath for their summer holidays. Cycle paths take the cyclist away from traffic and into unique nature areas. In August, when the heather is in bloom, the heath unfolds a purple carpet - a wonderful sight!
Here are some cycle routes that take you to some of the most beautiful heaths. You're sure to enjoy them this month. But hey, if you're not in Holland right now, don't worry. There are enough places of interest along these routes to make them worthwhile all the year round.
